Application for Examination

Application must be made on the prescribed form and must be received by the Chairman no later than 60 days before the scheduled date of the examination.  It must be accompanied by two recent, clear, 3 x 3 photographs, autographed on the front by the applicant.

Each candidate must comply with American Board of Legal Medicine regulations in effect at the time the examination is taken, and also those in effect at the time the Certificate (if any) is issued, regardless of when the original application is filed.

Examination

A review course will be offered on Annually before the Annual Meeting of the American College of Legal Medicine to prepare for the ABLM Certification Examination and to acquire knowledge relating to medicolegal issues. For details, registration and Review Course syllabus, please contact the Chairman.

Examination

The examination must be successfully passed by all candidates.  It consists of multiple choice questions designed to test the candidate’s knowledge of the fundamental terms, concepts and issues of Legal Medicine. For a listing of topics that will be covered in the examination, see Syllabus.

Re-Application & Re-Examination

Any applicant who has been declared ineligible for admission to examination may refile or reopen his or her application without payment of an additional application fee only on the basis of additional information within two years of the filing date of the original application.

Any applicant who fails the examination may, upon timely application and payment of the appropriate fee, be admitted for re-examination within three years of the date of the failed examination.

Any applicant who has failed the examination twice may be required to undergo additional education and training in accordance with recommendations from the Board of Trustees before being admitted for further examination.

Applicants failing three examinations may, after lapse of at least one year, submit a new application and fee to re-establish their eligibility.
